Theresa Gomez

Longtime Oxnard resident, Theresa Gomez, passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2022 in Goleta, CA after a prolonged illness. Theresa was born on August 1, 1930 in Chaparra, Cuba to Lucas and Josefina Cabrera. Theresa and her husband, Enrique, emigrated to the United States from war-torn Cuba with their two young children in 1964. They moved directly to Oxnard where they reunited with family waiting for them in the Oxnard and Los Angeles County areas. Theresa helped rebuild a new life with her family in their new home. She helped raise two children and enrolled herself in college to obtain a teaching credential. Theresa went on to become a dedicated and beloved elementary school teacher of the Oxnard School District for over 20 years. She officially retired in 1999 and continued to substitute teach in the Oxnard School District for an additional ten years.

Theresa was very involved in her church community and was a lector of St. Anthony’s Church, Oxnard, for over 15 years. Adventurous and fearless - with a thirst for learning about other cultures - Theresa traveled the United States and the world as one of her many hobbies. From Minnesota to New York to Florida, from South America to Europe to Africa, Theresa absorbed the arts, food and terrain of each place she visited. Theresa took art and language classes to further her knowledge, and was a student of life. She loved dancing with her beloved husband, enjoyed going to the movies (and talking through them!), dining out at the newest restaurants, and shopping and dressing in the latest fashion trends. Theresa was very proud of her granddaughters’ achievements and attended all their academic and sporting events. She also liked to take her granddaughters on trips to Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, and other fantastic places along the coast of California.

Theresa is preceded in death by cherished husband, Enrique Felipe Gomez, married 65 years, and son Henry Joseph Gomez. She is survived by daughter Teresita Gomez (Joseph) Kontra of Santa Barbara, Granddaughters Marissa Roarty (Andrew Eaglesham) of San Francisco, Meghan Roarty (James Bedard) of Santa Barbara, Vanessa Gomez of Oxnard, and great grandchildren Bridget and Patrick Bedard of Santa Barbara.

Rosary services will be held on Friday, January 13, 2023 @ 7pm at Reardon Funeral Home, 511 North A. St., Oxnard. Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 14, 2023 @ 10am at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 2511 South C St., Oxnard. Burial (at Santa Clara cemetery) and reception to follow.
