It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we share the passing of Ruben Gomez, 62, beloved father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, cousin, and a friend to many. Ruben entered into eternal rest with our Lord Jesus Christ on July 5, 2025 with his loving family by his side. Ruben was the son of Virginia and Genaro Gomez of El Rio. He was born in Oxnard on May 24, 1963. He attended El Rio Elementary School, Rio Del Valle, and Rio Mesa High School. Upon graduating high school in 1982, he went into construction.
Ruben had 18 years in the field of construction, then got into teaching, and then apprenticeship. He had about 20 years of teaching and earned his credentials at UCLA.
Ruben worked for the Cement Mason Finishers Union Local 600, as an Instructor, Worksite Supervisor, and Job Developer for Ventura County Building & Construction Trades Council and with Tri Counties Labor Foundation, and retired with the Laborers Training and Re-Training School of Southern California as a Laborers Cement Mason Apprenticeship Coordinator. Ruben was also a member of the Laborers International Union of North America Local 585.
Ruben was a lifelong resident of El Rio, raising his three children. He was involved with El Rio Lions Club, where he served as President. He coached and was also involved with El Rio ASA Softball and El Rio Little League for decades. He was known on and off the field as “Coach Ruben”. He enjoyed working around his house doing yard work, cruising in his 1955 Chevy truck and projects in his house or garage. His most recent project was rebuilding his 1936 Ford. He loved having his family and friends over for boxing or just to enjoy his famous tri-tip. He had a big heart, was a brother to many and a friend to countless others.
Ruben is survived by his children: Jamie V. Gomez, Ruben A. Gomez (Mandy), Erica C. Gomez; sister Diana Munoz (Jess Munoz); grandchildren Ryan A. Gomez, Leah N. Gomez, and Noel L. Carreon; nephews; nieces; cousins; and his buddy, Cookie. He was preceded in death by his mother and father Virginia and Genaro Gomez; brother Genaro C. Gomez Jr.; his stepson Louie Carreon Jr.
We would like to thank our family and friends for being there for him, visiting him and keeping him in your thoughts and prayers. Ruben left a great impact on so many people and touched and inspired so many lives. He will be missed greatly. Life will never be the same, it will be difficult, however, we will move forward together.
Know your worth, don’t settle for less, live life like it’s your last day…
