October 3, 1929 - November 3, 2022. On November 3, surrounded by her loved ones, our beloved mom Rosario stepped through the gates of heaven into the loving embrace of God and our beloved dad Abel Torres Magana, who had made his eternal journey eight years ago on November 1, 2014. Our mom waited until she knew all her children had been by her side before taking her final breath; God & family togetherness were what were most important to her. Rosario was born in Arandas, Jalisco, Mexico. She grew up in poverty, but she always had an unwavering faith in God. In her twenties, she worked in a pharmacy in the tiny town of Arandas, dispensing medication and often traveling the uneven cobblestone streets to give injections to ill patients at their homes. On January 21, 1956 she married Abel, and he took her to the U.S., where he’d already been working for several years. She was in a foreign land, didn’t know the language, and didn’t know how to cook, but she was a resilient soul. She learned English and learned to cook the most amazing meals (her tortillas, tamales, and chilies rellenos were legendary). And, to their great joy, Rosario & Abel had six children in the next 7 years (1958-1965). Rosario even had her photo in the Oxnard Press Courier in 1962 when she gave birth to our twin brothers Anthony and Abel at St. John’s Hospital! Rosario was a quiet, unassuming woman who shunned the spotlight. She was content to be in the background, making sure everyone was taken care of. She was up before sunrise, making meals for us, getting us off to a school in our crisply ironed Catholic school uniforms, keeping our home spotless, and tending to her garden outside; it was remarkable how much she was able to accomplish each day. Rosario was nurturing, generous, kindhearted and loving. She prayed unceasingly for us and all who were in need; she always had her rosary with her. Along with our dad, she taught us the importance of respecting each other and others, the value of hard work, the courage to persevere in spite of difficulties, and -most of all- solid Christian family values. Mom was a devout Catholic who attended church daily at Oxnard’s Santa Clara Catholic Church for over six decades. Our hearts are broken, but we know she’s in a much better place and we’re so grateful that God blessed us with such a wonderful angel here on earth; she will forever live in our hearts and thoughts. Rosario is survived by her six children: Mary Bek (Michael), Victor Magana (Shareen), John Magana (Connie), Abel Magana Jr. (Esther), Anthony Magana (Tillie), George Magana (Gigi), and our “extra baby brother” Brandon Martinez (our cousin who mom babysat for many years). And also her beloved grandchildren Alexandra, Elizabeth, Katharine, Sarah, Mark, Scott, Miranda, Diego, Tony, Georgina, Brooklynn, and Nicholas. And her great-grandchildren Charlotte Rose and Louise. And mom’s nieces and nephews living in the U.S. and in Mexico. Rosary will be held November 16, 2022, 7pm, at Reardon Mortuary. Funeral mass will be held November 17, 2022 at Santa Clara Catholic Church at 10am (officiated by Fr. Marco Ortiz), with graveside services immediately following at Santa Clara Cemetery.
