Robert Jered “RJ” McInnis Jr passed away peacefully in Ventura, Ca on June 27,2023 after a sudden illness and brief hospitalization. He was born on April 24,1935 in Long Beach, California, the child of Clara and Robert McInnis, and was preceded in death by his beloved wife Cathy.
Bob’s spirit was infectious, and he was generous and sharing in all facets of his life. Bob was our loving patriarch, family member and friend. He lived a varied, interesting and adventurous life. His formative years were spent at Lake Arrowhead, and in Riverside and Long Beach, building homes, learning the trades from his dad and, in his spare time, racing hotrods with friends. Next, he attended college at Cal State San Luis Obispo to study architecture. He subsequently transitioned into the banking industry and became an operations manager for Bank of America branches in LA and Ventura County. Bob then moved on and went to work for the Del Webb Corporation Las Vegas in their casino operations.
Bob had a love for VWs and classic cars and spent time rebuilding and customizing them. One of his favorite trips included camping and driving his dune buggy at Oceana Dunes in Pismo Beach. After going on a sailing trip to Catalina, he came home and without any real sailing knowledge bought his first sailboat, and he began his life as a sailor, boat captain and owner of a marine business. He lived on his boat at Ventura and Channel Islands Harbors, immersed in customized boat building, sailing and power boating. As a member of Ventura Yacht Club, he participated in racing crews and sailed to Hawaii, Baja and the Channel Islands. Then, there was that love for fast cars and racing which led to working as CFO for Magnuson Superchargers. He was a renaissance man who was knowledgeable in many fields, and was sought out for his sound advice, experience and wonderful stories.
His retirement allowed him to spend time with his wife Cathy and play golf. His travels had provided him with the luxury of playing at many top golf courses. He and Cathy anticipated with pleasure the road trips to their favorite golf get-a-way near Morro Bay. He loved his weekly golf games at Westlake, his occasional cigar, his tools and puttering. His latest hobby was refurbishing and bringing new life to reclaimed Schwinn bikes. He enjoyed listening to Classical piano music, reading detective novels and his time in the kitchen cooking his specialty breakfasts.
Bob is survived by and will be remembered and missed by his family; Cathy’s children Gary Taylor Jr. and Cara Welker, Grandchildren Garret Taylor (Kayla and daughter Finley) and Petty Officer Danielle Dubois. Sister-in-Law Patricia Torreyson and Cousins Christine & Jerry Phillips. He valued his many good friends as family, including Lance Troxel and Karen and Dave Eckert.
Memorial donations in his memory may be made to The Disabled Veterans National Foundation at dvnf.org.
