Richard Nevarez, a longtime resident of El Rio died on December 29, 2021, at the age of 91. Richard was born July 25, 1930, to Eulalio and Refugio Nevarez of Santa Paula.
Richard graduated from Santa Paula High School. He served in the Army during the Korean War between 1951 and 1953 and then attended Ventura College. In 1956, he began his professional career at Point Mugu Naval Base as a draftsman. He retired in 1989 with 35 years of government service. For 22 of those years, he worked with the Naval Ship Weapon Systems Engineering Station at Port Hueneme Naval Base as a civilian engineering technician.
On September 15, 1956, he married Tillie Macias of El Rio. They enjoyed 65 years of marriage and raised four children: Richard, Frank, Robert, and Carole. Richard was active in the community. He volunteered as an usher at the Santa Clara Chapel in El Rio, joined the El Rio Lions Club, supported the El Rio Little League, and participated in the Rio Mesa High School Booster Club and the California Scholarship Federation committee. He also served on the Pt. Mugu Credit Union loan committee.
He is preceded in death by his parents Eulalio and Refugio Nevarez and brother Eulalio Nevarez, Jr.
He is survived by his wife Tillie, sons Richard Nevarez, Frank Nevarez and Robert Nevarez, daughter Carole Nevarez, and daughter-in-law Cheryl Nevarez, and grandchildren Rebecca Nevarez and Joseph Nevarez. He is survived by his brother Henry Nevarez, as well as countless numbers of nieces, nephews, and godchildren.
Recitation of the rosary will take place at 7 pm on Sunday, January 9 at Reardon Funeral Home in Oxnard, with visitation beginning at 6 PM. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, January 10, 10 AM at the Santa Clara Chapel in El Rio. Burial will follow immediately at Santa Clara Cemetery in Oxnard.
