Michael Mercurio Obituary

Michael Mercurio was born on April 13, 1941, in Queens, NY, where he first learned the value of hard work, loyalty, and family. These values guided him through every phase of his life.

After high school, Michael joined the United States Marine Corps, and though he wore the uniform with honor, he was never one to follow orders blindly. Michael always stood up for what he felt was right and spoke up for those who didn't have a voice. After the Marines, Michael moved to Charleston, SC, where he began a career in insurance. Years later, he had a successful career as a restaurant owner and real estate broker.

Michael and his wife, Gillian, eventually moved to Las Vegas so that Gill could pursue a career opportunity at UNLV. When they retired in 2016, they relocated to Oxnard to be closer to family in Manhattan Beach and Santa Barbara. But Michael was never one to sit on his laurels, and once in Oxnard, he found another calling serving his new community. He founded Neighborhood Pride - an initiative that encourages local volunteers to take ownership of their neighborhoods and work together to make Oxnard a cleaner, safer,  and more beautiful place. In recognition of his efforts, he was named Citizen of the Year - an honor he wore humbly but proudly.

Michael is survived by his wife, Gillian; his daughters, Lisa and Sarah; his son-in-law, Stephen; his granddaughters, Sophia and Brynn; and Gillian's sister, Anne, and her husband, Stan Lowenberg.
