Melvin William Swan Jr, a cherished father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on April 9, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and kindness. Born on August 22, 1938, Melvin touched the lives of many through his unwavering commitment to family, his community, and his passions.
Predeceased by his parents, Melvin and Rosina Swan, and his beloved son Christopher Swan, Melvin is survived by his devoted daughter Melissa Johnson, his son-in-law and daughters Andrew and Kashia Hathaway, Robert and Sondra Lough, as well as his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His grandchildren, Alexander Peter Hathaway, Matthew Joseph Hathaway and his wife Kristen Hathaway, Nathaniel Melvin Hathaway, Audrey Ann Hathaway, Jacob Palmer Hathaway, Nicholas Evan Lough, and Regan Whitney Lough, along with great-grandchildren Amelia Grace Hathaway and Luke Joseph Hathaway, will continue to carry his memory forward with love and admiration.
Melvin's sister Marilyn and brother-in-law Dan Perkins, and his nephew and niece Andrew Perkins and Rebecca Perkins, will forever cherish his memory, honoring the special bond they shared.
Among the special people who enriched Melvin's life were the mothers of his children: Sandra Fondren, Kathy Bossoletti, and Evelyn Johnson, along with close friends and loved ones considered to be family, Bill Smith and family, Jim Smith and family, Jenise Wilson and family, and his dear friend Lucy Bernal, alongside countless other close relatives and friends.
Throughout his life, Melvin touched many communities through his various occupations and passions. From his roots in Hendricks, Minnesota, to his ventures in the Washington, D.C. area, Kansas, and the California cities of San Francisco, San Bernardino, and Oxnard, where he resided from 1947 until his passing in 2024, Melvin left an indelible mark wherever he went.
Melvin was a man of unwavering intellect and boundless curiosity; he journeyed through life with a thirst for knowledge and a dedication to his passions. Graduating from Oxnard High School in 1956, he embarked on an academic adventure that would shape his future endeavors. At Ventura College, he earned an Associate Degree in Art and Pre-Law in 1959, laying the foundation for his academic pursuits. Continuing his educational odyssey, Melvin graduated from San Jose State University in 1963 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science and a Minor in Business, a testament to his relentless pursuit of excellence. Furthering his commitment to education, he obtained his Teaching Credentials from California Lutheran University in 1966. Melvin's academic achievements not only reflected his intellectual prowess but also his unwavering determination to make a difference in the world. His legacy of lifelong learning and dedication to personal and professional growth will forever inspire those whose lives he touched.
Melvin was a man of diverse interests and unwavering support, touching the lives of many through his love for sports and dedication to his family. He was a devoted father who enthusiastically supported his daughters in their athletic pursuits, cheering them on in volleyball and soccer with boundless pride. Melvin's passion for sports extended beyond the sidelines as he actively participated in community volleyball, fostering camaraderie and friendship. As a coach, he imparted his wisdom and guidance not only on the court but also in the classroom, where he taught alongside coaching basketball. He held allegiance to his favorite teams, the Lakers and the Dodgers. Melvin's legacy of sportsmanship, mentorship, and unwavering support will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
As a teacher at Ocean View School in Oxnard, California, and later as an independent broker and insurance agent, notably with New York Life for over 50 years, Melvin's dedication to serving others was evident in every aspect of his life. He built enduring relationships with his clients, ensuring their well-being and security throughout the years. Later, serving his clients alongside his junior partner, Mark Soovajian, a registered representative/licensed agent of New York Life, whom he personally assigned to continue serving his clients. Melvin's commitment to their welfare was unwavering.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Melvin found joy in property management, fostering connections with tenants and workers alike. He had an insatiable curiosity for business, law, and history, and enjoyed sharing his knowledge with others.
In his leisure time, Melvin delighted in playing card games, particularly poker and pinochle, with friends and family on special occasions. He treasured moments spent with loved ones, such as the Minnesota Family Reunion in 2013, where he reconnected with cherished relatives.
Melvin spoke fondly of Thanksgiving gatherings with his sister, Marilyn and her family. And over the last five years, while defeating a diagnosis of cancer and fighting off other health issues, he enjoyed a family camping trip to Northern California, visiting Hearst Castle, and another family trip to Mexico. Melvin especially cherished annual gatherings for Christmas and his birthday in his home. His home became a sanctuary, a place where family and close friends converged in celebration sharing a timeless bond of kinship, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Melvin's love for classic cars and his adventurous spirit culminated in his final trip to Alaska in July 2023, fulfilling a bucket list dream with his family by his side.
Melvin William Swan Jr will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of compassion, generosity, and warmth will continue to inspire those whose lives he touched. May his memory be a blessing, and may he rest in eternal peace.
A celebration of life service will be held at Reardon Funeral Home, 511 North A Street, in Oxnard, California on May 18th, 2024, 10:30a-12:00p. Friends and family are welcome to attend. If anyone wishes to send flowers, kindly send them to the service location one day prior to the event.
