Martina (Martha) Zepeda Zambrana was born on November 11, 1929. She was the 9th child of Edubijes Zepeda and Maria Isabel Candelario, born in Guachinango, Jalisco, Mexico.
As a little girl, the family moved to Nayarit in and around the city of Compostela. As an adult she then moved to Mexicali in search of work and slowly, many of her family moved there. In 1967, she moved to Oxnard with her youngest son and worked as a farm laborer. She was very proud of her involvement with the farm laborer movement.
In the early 70's she met the love of her life, Guadalupe Zambrana, and they remained together until his death in 1997.
