It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of the patriarch of the Salazar family, Macedonio “Macy” Herrera Salazar. On Wednesday evening, April 6, 2022, he passed away peacefully at the age of 91. His immediate family surrounded him as he gained his golden wings. He will be remembered as a devoted and loyal husband, loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, as well as a supportive brother and uncle, godfather and sincere friend to many that knew him.

Macy is preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Nellie Duke Salazar, his parents and siblings: Pablo, Jose, Delfino, Altagracia, Catalina, Salome, Margarita, and Mucio Salazar.

Macy was born on January 18, 1931 in Santiago Congruipo, Mexico to Mucio and Maria Del Rosario Herrera Salazar. He immigrated to the United States at the age of 23 and eventually settled in Oxnard. He was a 68 year resident of Oxnard, California. On July 31, 1955, he married his true love Nellie Duke at the original Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Oxnard. He was a parishioner of St. Anthony’s and Santa Clara parishes. In 1968, Macy became a U.S. citizen. As such, he lived his life proudly, full of optimism and hope for a brighter tomorrow, always used his right to vote for what he believed in politically and truly believed in the American dream.

Macy began his legacy as a master tailor working for several downtown Oxnard businesses, as well as customizing suits for private clients, family and friends up until his retirement. He found great joy in celebrating his immediate and extended families on every level of achievement, as well as playing billiards and card playing, His passion for tending to his chili “plantation” was well known by those that knew him, for his pockets always contained the fruits of his labor; ready to spice up any meal! Like many from Southern California, he was an avid fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Lakers.

He was a 49 year Life Member of Oxnard Elks Lodge #1443, as well as a member of Oxnard Knights of Columbus #750, 3rd and 4th Degree San Buenaventura Assembly.

Macy is survived by his children Paul (Oxnard), daughter Teri Vasquez (Jimmy), Ventura, son Michael (Erica Barbee), Camarillo, and son Edward (Carla Castilla) Salazar of Sacramento, along with his grandchildren Michael Christian Salazar, Ryan Merritt (Kyle), Katie McCabe (Matt), and Brenna Vasquez. Graced by love are his great-granddaughters, Halle and Nova Merritt and Maisie McCabe.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Fresenius Kidney Care of Ventura and Livingston nurses for their professional care and compassion provided during his time of need.
