Juan Manuel "John" Cortez, went to his heavenly home on January 27, 2024. John was born February 11, 1950, in Harlingen Texas to Erasmo Cortez, Sr. and Octavia Maria Cortez. At the age of 10, John and his family moved to Oxnard where he attended Our Lady of Guadalupe grammar school and Oxnard High school.
John was a lifelong and passionate enthusiast of Lowriding. He was an original member of the “Stylistics” car club and in the 1970s he was in Oxnard’s “New Image” car club. Throughout his life John owned several lowriders including his 1959 Impala, 1966 Impala,1973 Pontiac Catalina and 1954 Chevrolet. He had a great work ethic where he was employed by Del Norte Recycling Center and most recently Amazon. John was honest, loved playing the guitar (especially 1950s and 1960s “oldies”), and he loved family.
He was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. John is survived by his wife Marty Vaca; sons: John Jr. (Erica), Peter (Roxana), and Erick; daughter Naomi Perez; grandchildren: Jaime, Andres, Emilio, John III, Daniel, Xiomara, Elicia, Desiree, and Eunice; brothers: Erasmo “Tony” Cortez (Yvette) and Alex Cortez (Angie); sisters: Juanita Lopez (Jose), Lucy Cisneros (Bobby), Felis Rodriguez (David Bloom), Blanca “Blanche” Lopez (Tomas), Virginia “Virgie” Cortez, Gloria Lopez (Richard), and Graciela “Gracie” Cruz; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother Octavia; father Erasmo Sr.; brothers: Patrocino, Antolino, Gabriel, Gustavo, and Eliseo; nephews Simon Aristegui, Jr. and Erasmo “Bo” Cortez; and brothers-in-law Roberto “Bobby” Cisneros and David Bloom, Sr.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, February 12 at Reardon Funeral Home, 511 N. A St., Oxnard. Rosary will begin at 6:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 13 at Santa Clara Church, 323 S. E St., Oxnard. Following Mass, we will be cruising John to Santa Clara Cemetery, Oxnard for burial.
