Joyce Sihler (1937-2023), a longtime Oxnard resident, died peaceably Wednesday, February 15. Her wish to die at home surrounded by family was fulfilled. The depth of sorrow her family and friends feel is a measure of the love and joy they shared, and the countless lives Joyce touched during her time among us. Faith, family, and freedom are words to describe Joyce. Add to it friends and it completes the picture of who she was and the life she led. A devout Christian, Joyce’s command of Biblical knowledge and its application to everyday living was an inspiration to family, friends, and to the organizations she belonged to. She was the longtime chaplain, and parliamentarian, for the Channel Islands Republican Women Federated; a past president and
recording secretary for the Ventura County chapter of Gold Star Families; and a lifetime time member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Air Force Sergeants Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars - Ladies Auxiliary, Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, ARC of Ventura County, The Air Force Association, National Rifle Association, and Good Sam Club. Volunteerism and giving back to her community were hallmarks of her life.Joyce valued freedom and wore her love of God and country on her sweaters, her car, and her home.
She instilled in her children and grandchildren a love for God and respect for our nation and its founding principles. She raised them to be independent thinkers, challenging them to be true to themselves. Joyce knew she had to put food on the table for her two daughters after her beloved husband John, an army veteran …. died. She worked at the Ventura County auditor’s office, State Farm Insurance company and Vogue Sign company and she continued to volunteer! She was blessed to have traveled this great nation of ours, sometimes because of hardship, “lessons learned”, but more often out of an enduring sense of adventure, curiosity, and desire for her family to know and love the nation they were born into. Adversity was never a hurdle. For Joyce, it was an opportunity! Joyce Sihler knew faith in God created strong families, and that from this combination, happiness, prosperity, and freedom would follow. She freely gave of herself to her family and to others. Her daughters and their children enjoyed history, the theater, music, and a good joke! Today, Joyce Sihler’s family and friends mourn their loss… mother, grandmother, friend, and mentor.
She is preceded in death by her cherished mother Lillian, revered father Dan, also a veteran of our nation, and by her beloved husband John. Her best friend Beth Sowers and her favorite Aunt Nettie. And her grandson Matthew Facto who died far too young.
Joyce is survived by her two daughters, Morgan Cain, the younger, from Los Angeles and her children Matthew and Allison, and Sandy Moore from Alaska her husband Carl, and children Misti and her husband Walton, Samantha and her husband Mike, and Douglas, Brian, and Harriet.
