Joseph “Joe” Daniel Castanon, born on September 5, 1937, in Ventura was called to the Lord on Holy Thursday, April 17, 2025. He lived in Oxnard all his life. He passed away at St. John’s Regional Medical Center after complications from an emergency surgery. He was surrounded by his wife, Rose, daughter, Denise, and goddaughter Kamara Ya.
Joe was devoted to his Catholic faith as well as his immediate and extended family, embodying the motto of the Benedictine monks, “Ora et Labora” — pray and work. He served as a group leader at the Oasis del Espiritu Santo for many years and was a parishioner of Santa Clara Church his whole life. Joe served overseas in the Army during the Korean War and worked at Point Mugu in telemetry for several years before graduating from Cal State Northridge in 1973 with the help of the GI Bill. He worked as a realtor for many years and ended his career as a postal carrier.
Joe was an avid reader, loved history, playing the keyboard, gardening, and especially playing with his grandchildren. He had an outstanding sense of humor, and friends and family relied on his steadfast wisdom and support. For the last 10 years he cared for his two elderly sisters assisted by Rose.
He was born to Miguel Rosas Castanon and Guadalupe Trejo. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rose O. Castanon, daughter; Denise Castanon; son-in-law, Trevor Parker; brother, Robert Castanon (Mary); sister, Lupe “Carol” Qualls; grandchildren Adela and Cruz Parker; and many nieces, nephews and godchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Refugio Castanon, Esther Castanon, Celia Castanon, Aurora C. Garcia and Manuel Castanon.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, May 4 at Reardon Funeral Home, 511 North A Street, Oxnard. Rosary will begin at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 5 at Santa Clara Church, 323 South E Street, Oxnard. Interment will follow at Santa Clara Cemetery, Oxnard and a reception at Cafe Amri will follow interment.
