Our father, grandfather, and friend “Joe" Avelar took his last breath on December 18, 2023. He fought every step of the way since he had a severe stroke in October 2022. In the end, a combination of complications along with pneumonia took him. He was on hospice for a few days then left this earth to join his mother, father, and sister in the heavens above.
Our hearts are broken but he had the biggest life!
At the age of 12 our father, along with his parents and sister, immigrated to the US from the Azores. He learned how to speak English, obtained a college degree, was the president of the local union and of the Lemonwood Neighborhood Watch Council. He worked for the City of Oxnard for 42 years in several roles, including Senior Code Enforcement Officer. He was the cool enforcement officer! Our father loved this city and was honored to be a part of making a difference for its citizens.
Joe is survived by his daughter Julianna "Julie" Avelar; son David Avelar; former wife Beverley Morgan; grandson Joshua Hudgins; daughter in love Codi Mahoney; granddaughter Daisy Avelar; and numerous friends and co-workers.
We would like to give many thanks and prayers for the staff at Villariana Care for taking care of our dad. They were beyond kind and attentive to all of his needs.
