John McDougal Sr. Obituary

Our family is sad to announce the passing of our father, John A. McDougal Sr. on May 20, 2023. An only child, John was born on September 1, 1932, in Oxnard, the beloved city he would call his lifelong home. John's Mother Mary was herself an Oxnard native and the daughter of immigrants from Portugal's Azores Islands. Harold A. McDougal, John's father, was a medic in World War I who, after surviving the war, would start a family with Mary and go into the automobile business.
John attended Santa Clara School on South E Street, where the school still stands today, graduating high school in 1950. He left Oxnard to attend college at the University of Southern California (USC), where he would graduate as a Doctor of Pharmacy. Love couldn't wait, however, and before finishing school, John and Mary (Folawn) were married at Santa Clara Church. They would soon settle into the family home on Douglas Avenue, where they would raise their five children. John began his professional career at Laubacher Pharmacy and continued his work as a pharmacist for over fifty years, primarily at John's Laubacher Fremont Pharmacy. The McDougal family enjoyed the many years of backyard bar-b-ques, picnics, and camping trips. John shared his love of the outdoors with his family and friends, logging thousands of miles in the Ford Country Squire station wagon with the pop-up trailer in tow, creating precious memories that we still cherish today.
The marriage of John and Mary would eventually dissolve, however, and a few years later John would meet and marry the second love of his life, Jacqueline (Friedman), with whom he would remain until Jackie's passing in 2017. John and Jackie spent well over thirty wonderful years together, enjoying travel, golf and gatherings with family and friends. We fondly remember the Parade of Lights celebrations, enjoying John's famous fish chowder at their home on Channel Islands harbor.
John loved fishing, hiking, backpacking, woodworking, travel, theater, golf and especially bike riding, which he continued to do well into his 80's. Many of our friends and neighbors recall seeing John riding around town and making his rounds.
The pharmacy business demanded long hours, yet John still found time to invest in his family and community. He was a Scout Master for the Boy Scouts of Troop 205, an Indian Guides Chief, a Salvation Army volunteer pharmacist, and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 750, serving as the Grand Knight in 1976-1977. John was also involved in the Rotary Club of Oxnard, supporting many events to benefit our local community.
John is survived by his five children, Susan Dodd, John (LoRena) McDougal Jr., Lisa (Joseph) Urango, Timothy (Wendy) McDougal, and Christopher (Heather) McDougal; two beloved step- children, Sharon (Rich) Rogers and Steve (Laureen) Friedman; 18 grandchildren, 11 great- grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
Visitation will be on Thursday, June 8th, from 4 to 8 pm at Reardon Funeral Home, 511 North A Street, followed by a funeral service at 10 am on Friday, June 9th at Santa Clara Church in Oxnard.
