Jeri Quintanilla Obituary

Jeri (Jerilyn) Quintanilla passed away on February 10, 2024 following a valiant battle with recurring cancer. She died comfortably at home, surrounded by family.

A Ventura native, Jeri was the youngest of four children born to Leo and Nellie Butts on August 10, 1953. She attended Loma Vista Elementary, Anacapa Junior High and Ventura High School, where she met Ray during their sophomore year. They married in 1975 and were together 48 years. After earning her Masters degree in Speech Pathology and Early Education from California State University Northridge, Jeri tenured a long and illustrious career working for the Ventura Unified School District. She retired from teaching in the district’s Early Intervention Program after 38 years of service.

Jeri’s life was enriched by her pets. She was devoted to therapy dog work through the Love on a Leash organization. She and her dogs Dug, Murphy, Pearle, and Lola spent countless hours volunteering to provide joy and comfort at Ventura County libraries, hospitals, classrooms, mental health facilities, nursing and veterans homes.

Jeri was an avid Dodgers fan who frequently took her family to spring training and games across the nation and hardly missed a game on the radio or television. Her love of art and crafts could be seen in her home and garden, which she and Ray transformed into a peaceful sanctuary for their family. Passersby were greeted by a vibrant, changing display on her front porch. In the past three years, one of Jeri’s greatest joys in life came from being Oma to her granddaughter, Darby.

Jeri is survived by her husband, Ray Quintanilla; daughter, Katy Quintanilla; son, his wife and their daughter, Nic Quintanilla, Kelsey Merritt and Darby Quintanilla; and her siblings, Judy Borich, Ryan Butts and Janell Guidry.

Jeri was creative, active, supportive, nurturing, and greatly loved in the community. She will be missed by many.
