Hatsumi Wakatsuki
October 25, 1932 – February 4, 2026
Hatsumi Wakatsuki, beloved matriarch of the Wakatsuki and Katayama families, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and deep devotion to family.
Born on October 25, 1932, in Lomita, California, Hatsumi was the youngest child and only daughter of Some and Naosaku Katayama, immigrants from Japan. As a child, she endured the hardship of World War II internment, an experience that quietly shaped her resilience and compassion throughout her life.
She later married her beloved husband, Ray Wakatsuki, and together they raised five children—Mitchell, Lynn, Ryan, Greg, and Rachel—building a life rooted in hard work and togetherness. Hatsumi was the heart of her family, known for her kindness, honesty, and steady presence. She loved bringing everyone together, especially during New Year’s celebrations, where she lovingly preserved Japanese traditions through her cooking.
A woman of faith, Hatsumi served faithfully in her church throughout her adult life, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and lived her life as a source of comfort, wisdom, and encouragement to those around her. She was a lifelong learner, an avid reader, and someone whose sharp wit and warm spirit were cherished by all who knew her.
Her legacy bore witness to five children, eleven grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren, whom carry forward her strength and love. In passing she is reunited with her husband Ray, whom she dearly missed.
Hatsumi Wakatsuki will be deeply missed and forever remembered for the life she lived and the family she held together with love.
Her memorial will be held at the Gary Drive location of her church on:
