Garth Leo Cupp, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2023 with his family by his side, leaving behind a legacy of cherished memories and a profound impact on the lives of those he touched.
Born in Hinsdale, Illinois, on November 9, 1948, to Edgar Leo Cupp and Ethel May Williams (née Hellman), Garth’s journey led him to Southern California at a young age. Settling in Oxnard with his parents and sister, Nancy, in 1953, he called this vibrant coastal city his home for more than six decades.
As a child, Garth cultivated lifelong friendships and unforgettable experiences. Among his most cherished memories was being part of the 1960 Ventura County Little League Championship team, the Yankees, etching his name into Ventura County’s youth sports history. He attended Kamala Elementary School and Haydock Junior High before graduating from Hueneme High School in 1966. His time as a Hueneme Viking was filled with accomplishments in Varsity Basketball and Track, creating stories he would share with loved ones throughout his life.
At age 17, Garth enlisted in the U.S. Army with parental permission, commencing a dedicated service to his country. Stationed out of Ford Ord in Northern California for basic training, he spent a significant period of his service at the USAG-Baumholder in Baumholder, Germany, where he served as a tank crewman with the rank of Sergeant E-5. Honorably discharged in 1969, he returned to Oxnard, where he would embark on the next chapter of his life.
In 1970, destiny smiled upon him as he met the love of his life, Margot Meichel. Their souls intertwined and on September 30, 1972, they exchanged vows, embracing a union that would stand the test of time.
Garth’s passion for sports continued to grow, particularly for basketball and baseball. He delighted in attending games with his children and, later, his grandchildren, holding season tickets for the Angels, Dodgers, and Diamondbacks. His love for ballpark cuisine was legendary, always finding the best spots to savor a great meal while witnessing unforgettable moments in baseball history. From witnessing Reggie Jackson’s playoff home run for the Angels, including catching a foul ball from Reggie himself, to being present for Dennis Martinez pitching the 13th Perfect Game in MLB History, Garth’s love for the game knew no bounds. His final game brought him the joy of witnessing Shohei Ohtani’s incredible 13-strikeout performance against the Royals.
Beyond being a spectator, Garth remained active in sports throughout his life by playing Men’s Softball in Oxnard and winning the City Championship in 1977 and by coaching youth baseball for CBC Little League. Throughout these roles, he imparted valuable lessons and mentored numerous young lives both on and off the field.
Throughout his life, Garth experienced success in various professions. He worked as a Produce Broker for McGrath and Meichel Sales, facilitating the transportation of exquisite produce from Ventura County to destinations nationwide and overseas. Later he ventured into entrepreneurship, owning and operating Camarillo Appliance and TV, providing top-notch customer service to Camarillo and neighboring communities.
In his later years, Garth found immense joy in spending time with his dear friends and his growing family, cherishing every moment with them.
He leaves behind a loving wife, Margot, and three adoring children, Nicole Herring (Kelly), Monieca, and Garth Meichel (Stephanie). His pride and joy were his seven grandchildren, Nicholas, Jaivon, Karson, Jacorey, Mackenzie, Kameron, and Elizabeth of Phoenix, AZ. Garth’s memory will also be cherished by his sister, Nancy Cryan (Barrie), two nieces, Dori Walker (AJ), Vicki Fessman, and his nephew Barrie Cryan (Sue), along with his many great nieces and nephews.
As we mourn the passing of Garth Leo Cupp, we celebrate a life filled with love, passion, and unforgettable moments. His indomitable spirit and caring nature will forever resonate in our hearts.
