Eva Laubacher Obituary

Eva Freeman Laubacher, 93, died on January 16, after a brief illness. She was born on May 26, 1927, to Mark and Mabel Freeman in Osceola, Wisconsin. Eva had one sister Marion. Her father died when she was very young, so Eva and her mother began an adventurous couple of years, staying with her maternal grandparents in Wisconsin. She later moved to Arkansas, and finally ended up in Chula Vista living with two of her Aunts. Eva finished school in Chula Vista and actually worked as a “Rosie the Riveter” towards the end of WWII. Eva and her mother moved to Oxnard and she began working at Poggi’s Drugstore where she met her future husband, Steve Laubacher. They were married in 1949 and had five children, nine grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Sons: Steve Jr (deceased), Hank (Margaret), Don (Michele) Daughters: Karen (Bill) Whitney, & Jane. Grandsons: Hank Jr. (Bree), Todd (Halee), Daniel, Lee (Katie), & Michael. Granddaughters: Beth (Ben) Baumer, Emily (Paul Penza), Callie & Katie. 7 great-grandchildren: Jack and Tyson Laubacher, Donovan and Vivienne Baumer, Lucas and Sam Penza & Maisy Laubacher.

Eva was the matriarch of the family and truly loved being with them. She was also a loving friend to all of her children’s friends and her house was always open to them. Steve and Eva were dedicated to their children supporting all their sporting events and school functions at Santa Clara High School. They helped run the Fiesta fundraiser and other functions at the school for many years. She was a member of Santa Clara parish.

Eva had many nicknames through the years, Coco to her children and grandchildren, Melloms, and Mrs. Chile to name a few. She was always busy with her sewing and quilting, creating numerous beautiful quilts many of which have become family heirlooms.

She was beautiful but tough as nails right up to the end. We will always remember Coco’s hugs and big wet kisses and will miss her dearly.

Many thanks to her dedicated and loving caregivers, Rosa Cacho and Carolina Ulloa. Also, many thanks to Assisted Hospice for their help. Memorial contributions can be made to your favorite charity or to City Center Transitional Living non-profit in Ventura.

Due to Covid 19, funeral services will be private, with a future celebration of her life to come at a later date.
