Elizabeth (“Betty”) Ann Brauer Bugg died at her home on Monday, December 5, 2022 after a long illness. She was 98 years old. Betty was born on October 28, 1924 in Lexington, KY to Dr. Alfred Charles Brauer and Ruth Conron Brauer. She had one brother, Charles, who predeceased her.
Betty attended local grade schools in Lexington and graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in home economics. She was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority and was elected to Mortar Board based on her scholastic achievement. During her student days at the university, she met her future husband, Sterling Lowe Bugg. They were married for 55 years until his death in 2002.
In the early 1950’s Sterling and Betty moved to Oxnard, CA where Mr. Bugg worked at the Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory in Port Hueneme and served concurrently as Head of the Department Civil Engineering and Head of the Department of Ocean Engineering at the end of his career.
Betty belonged to the First Presbyterian Church of Oxnard where she had served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher and was in the choir. Betty was also a member and past president of the former Ventura County Symphony League, member and past president of the Olivas Park Women’s Golf Club, and a member of the Ventura County Master Chorale. She played several types of recorders with baroque/renaissance music groups, and she enjoyed playing the piano and her harmonica. Betty was also active in the Girl Scouts and PTA at her children’s schools.
Mrs. Bugg is survived by her children, Richard Dale Bugg of Belle Isle, FL; Robert Lyman Bugg of Davis, CA; and Nancy Lynn Bugg Kulig and husband John Wayne Kulig of Clifton, VA, as well as by numerous beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
