On Monday, December 18, 2023, Angel Joseph Estrada took his last breath at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Oxnard on August 7, 1934 to Luis Delfino Estrada and Maria De Jesus Ortiz Estrada . Angel was one of 11 brothers and sisters who grew up in La Colonia en la calle Hayes and graduated from Oxnard High School in 1953 along with his loving wife of 72 years, Tila Santana Estrada.
As a boy he loved to raise chickens and pigeons and ran through boyhood with his faithful dog, Boots. His first job was at the tender age of 10 at La Victoria market as the butcher’s sidekick.
Angel was a man of all seasons, touching everyone he met in his day-to-day work life as well as in his travels around Europe, Mexico, South America, Egypt, and Turkey. He was a fierce entrepreneur and artist from early on, a band leader (The Angel Estrada Orchestra which later morphed into The Estrada Brothers by his younger brother Ruben), Angel’s Barber Shops, El Matador Cantina on Oxnard Blvd., The Hungry Ox and Café Ole on Fifth and C St., The Angel Hotel Residence on Hayes St. in La Colonia, KSTV, the first Spanish American TV station in Ventura County, and many real estate ventures. Not too shabby for a little boy from La Colonia who reached many, many milestones and touched many, many hearts along the way.
He led a full and supercharged life, leaving no stone unturned. He was a man of resilience, resourcefulness, and was a big promoter of higher education and the arts, often saying, “We work hard, we play hard.”
In his last days you would find Angel walking at Oxnard beach park with his wife Tila and Lil Girl his faithful little dog or sitting on his balcony enjoying a glass of wine and basking in the beautiful scenery giving thanks for a beautiful life he helped create for himself and his family.
Angel will be missed big time by his wife of 71 years (72 on January 15) Tila Estrada; daughters: Laura Victoria Guillen, Yvonne Estrada, and Angelique Estrada; grandchildren: Alexander Roberts, Marivi Estrada Roberts, Yvonne De La Rosa Fraser, Gabriel Mendoza, and Cesar Guillen Estrada; and great-grandchildren: Alyse Otila Kraatz, Matthew Ronald Kraatz, Isabella Guillen Toledo, Reagan Thomas Roberts, and Angelina Grace Roberts.
Rosary will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, January 11 at Santa Clara Church, 323 S. E St. Oxnard. Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 a.m. After Mass, Angel will be interred at Santa Clara Cemetery, Oxnard.
