Sister Kathleen Marie Kinney, R.S.M.

Sister Kathleen Marie died on November 29, 2018, at the age of 80. The sixth of the seven children of Thomas Kinney and Mary Reilly Kinney, she was born in Los Angeles where she attended St. Michael's Elementary School and Bishop Conaty Memorial High School. It was in high school that she met the Sisters of Mercy, and after graduation in 1955 she entered their novitiate in Burlingame, CA. Sister Kathleen, known by all as Sister Katie, professed vows in 1958 and began a fifty-four year ministry teaching in both elementary and high school. In the Bay Area Sister taught at St. Gabriel's School and St. Peter's School in San Francisco; Our Lady of Angels School in Burlingame; and St. Athanasius School in Mountain View. In southern California she taught at St. Thomas School and St. Aloysius School in Los Angeles, St. Pius School in Santa Fe Springs; and St. Charles School in San Diego. In 1984 after 26 years in elementary education, Sister Katie returned to her alma mater Bishop Conaty Memorial High School, where for the next twenty-eight years she taught religion and history, and for a few years served as assistant principal. She retired from teaching in 2012. She will be remembered by both her sisters in community and her students and colleagues for her humor, spirit, energy, and kindness. Sister is survived by her sister Cordelia (DeeDee), many nieces, and nephews, and her loving community of the Sisters of Mercy. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Thursday, December 6 at St. Mary Magdalen Chapel, 2532 Ventura Blvd., Camarillo, CA. On Sunday, December 9 at 7 p.m. a prayer service will be held at Marian Oaks Chapel, Sisters of Mercy, 2300 Adeline Drive, Burlingame. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma, on Monday December 10 at 10:a.m. Memorial gifts may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, 2300 Adeline Drive, Burlingame, CA 94010.
