Gilbert Marquez Ramirez passed away peacefully on August 4, 2018, after a brief illness. Gilbert, a life-long resident of Ventura County, was born in Saticoy, California on July 28, 1937. He and his wife, Vera, lived a full life-- traveling, socializing with friends and attending family gatherings. When they retired they enjoyed numerous road trips exploring the United States and Canada in their recreational vehicle - a favorite method of travel.

Gilbert received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University, Northridge. After graduation in 1974, he immediately began his career as guidance counselor at CSUN Counseling Center where he was employed for the next ten years. During his tenure at CSUN, he served as liaison for the very successful Outreach Program between the university and Oxnard and Ventura Colleges to facilitate the transfer of students to CSUN. In 1985 Gil went to work at Oxnard College as counselor/coordinator of the Career Transfer Center where, for the next 14 years, he continued to encourage and assist students in their path to higher education and fulfillment of career goals. To say that Gil loved his job is an understatement. It was all about helping students.

During his professional tenure, Gilbert served in numerous capacities on various local, state and professional committees to keep abreast of the latest regulations and assist in the development of new criteria.

With his calm, positive demeanor Gil was approachable to everyone. He was the consummate professional whom people sought for advice; easy to talk to, always friendly, and never too busy to listen. This incredible man, the last "Ramirez Tio," was the pillar in our families, greatly loved and respected for his personal ethics and family values.

The youngest of nine children, Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents Jose and Salome' Ramirez; brothers Romeo, Gus and Joe Ramirez; sisters Mary Castellano, Vera Hernandez, Sally Solis, Juliet Zamora and Helen Lopez. He is survived by his wife, Vera, and numerous first, second, and third generation nieces and nephews and extended family members.

We wish to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Memory Care staff of the Palms Bonaventure Assisted Living facility. Their love and support for Gilbert was above and beyond what anyone could ask.
