Jean P. McGarry
Jean P. Bellavance McGarry, age 81, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away on July 7, 2014 surrounded by her family.
Jean was born on May 4, 1933 in Franklin, New Hampshire. She was a New Englander at heart all of her life. Jean was raised in Tilton, New Hampshire and graduated from Tilton-Northfield High School. After high school, Jean joined the United States Air Force where she met and married John (Mac) McGarry in October, 1954. Jean and Mac left the service and attended Sacramento Jr. College and Sacramento State College while raising their three sons. After moving back to Oxnard in 1959, she graduated from San Fernando State College. Jean was a third grade teacher for both the Simi Valley and Oxnard Elementary School Districts, in addition to working with handicapped students. She retired as a Miller-Unruh special reading teacher. Jean remained an Oxnard resident until the time of her death.
After retirement, Jean enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, knitting and many, many trips to New Hampshire in October to visit family and to see the Fall colors which she loved. She and Mac enjoyed their daily lunch with friends at B.G.'s Restaurant in Oxnard. Jean also enjoyed being with her children, grandchildren and great-children. She is survived by her sons, Vincent (Patrice), Steven, and David (Patty), her grandchildren, Bryan (Suzie), Jenna, Danielle and Shelby, and her great-grandchildren, Samantha, Jessica and Joey. She is also survived by and will be dearly missed by her sister, Sylvia Douglas, and her family back East.
Funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony's Church in Oxnard, with burial to follow at Santa Clara Cemetery in Oxnard.
