Augustine Rivas Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our Dad, Augustine Aguirre Rivas (Auggie). God called him home in the early morning hours of June 28, 2014 while at home with his family by his side.

Dad was born in San Bernardino, California to the union of Guadalupe and Gavina Rivas on 27 November 1920, one of eight children.

The family moved to Santa Paula where Dad grew up in Limoneira and attended local schools. He often spoke fondly of his school days at Olivelands. Limoneira was a close knit community and Dad made lifelong friends, some of which became compadres. He enjoyed attending the annual Limoneira reunions where he and his friends reminisced about the great times they shared.

While working for the Limoneira company, Dad found his true calling as a truck driver. He drove semi trucks while employed by the Herrera and Hoskins Brothers Trucking Companies. He drove for Hoskins Brothers over 25 years, retiring in 1985. He truly enjoyed driving semis and the camaraderie shared with other truck drivers. Although retired over 29 years, he sustained his ability to provide directions to any destination without hesitation.

Dad married the love of his life, Anita Garcia on 18 July 1943 and was a loving husband of 71 years. They had six daughters (one stillborn) and resided in Oxnard since 1958. He is survived by his wife Anita; daughters Delia Reyes (Mario), Mary Lou Lopez (Danny), Amelia (Molly) Moraga (Tony - deceased), Rosemary Hernandez (Henry); 13 grandchildren Peter Zuniga (Alicia), Anita Zuniga, Ralph Armas, Mario Reyes (Shawn), Amber Bolanos (Tony), Frankie Lopez (Nikki), Scarlett Lopez, Racquel Maples (Bruce), Brandi Basua (Danny), Emma Denise Bates, Daniel Bates (Elaine), Yvette Hernandez, Henry Hernandez Jr.; 17 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren; sister; Manuela (Nellie) Villegas and many nephews, nieces and cousins. He was predeceased by his daughters Antonia Rivas and Emma Armas; brothers Mike and Rudy; sisters Maria Gonzales, Cande Trinidad, Lucy Rodriguez, and Lupe Lovio.

Dad provided strength, guidance, stability and comfort to our family. He was a quiet, honorable man who possessed honesty, humility, and was a man of his word. Dad was a friend to all and enjoyed talking and being among friends. He had a unique sense of humor and would make you laugh when you least expected. He enjoyed listening to music, admired classic cars, and was an avid boxing fan.

We are so thankful to have had a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great grandfather and we'll cherish his memory in our hearts forever. Dad, our only consolation is that you are in God's hands, no longer in pain, happy to be reunited with predeceased family members and friends and so joyful to be with your daughters who departed so long ago. We love you so very much Dad and will miss you dearly.

A special thank you to Dr. Tane Liu and her staff (Roberta) and the Livingston Memorial Hospice Staff (Julie Nishida, Michelle Clisby and especially to Daniel Canosa who Dad looked forward to seeing because of his personable and caring manner).

"The Broken Chain"
We little knew that day,
God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death, we do the same.

It broke our hearts to lose you.
You did not go alone.
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.

You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guide.
And although we cannot see you,
You are always at our side.

Our family chain is broken,
And nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.
